The Evolution Of Social Media Use Among College Students

In recent years, the social media habits among students changed drastically. Facebook, once being very popular, today loses popularity among young adults. Another unexpected thing is that students rarely check their emails. Instead they are using mobile tools, such as Instagram and Snapchat. With these changes, it is necessary for colleges to change the way they communicate with their students.

Use of smartphones

Today, young adults are spending more and more time with their mobile phones, and less time with other devices (computers, TVs, electronic books, gaming devices, etc.). According to one of the latest studies, they spend on average 3.6 hours a day with their smartphones and cell phones.

There is a good explanation for that. Smartphones provide a convenient alternative for using computers. According to a survey, conducted among college students, 87% of them never leave home without a mobile phone.

Social media statistics

As students are spending more time with smartphones, their social media habits are also changing. The surprising trend is that they move from Facebook to other services. Another study observed young adults in different countries for 15 months and revealed the following facts:

  • Today, young people prefer simpler services, such as Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and WhatsApp.

  • They refer to Facebook as “uncool” and keep their accounts alive just for communication with their relatives and older people.

Some time ago, Facebook CEO also admitted that teenagers use the website less than before. Another study examined how students today are searching for information about the right college. The results showed that the number of students using Facebook dropped 12%, to 67%. Also, most of the respondents do not trust social media pages of colleges and universities, although they still think universities’ websites are reliable.

Communication between students and administrations

Another surprising fact is that students are checking their email less often than before and that they find it painful to check their emails regularly. At the same time, people at college administrations, like most adults, are used to checking email and do it regularly.

An experiment was conducted with college students and the results were surprising. According to the research, students spend only 6 minutes a day reading their emails. The only thing they spend less time on is search engines. In general, during a semester, they spend 123 minutes a day on a computer, and the biggest part of it, 31 minutes, is spent on social websites.

It means that many of the emails sent by college admins do not reach students. According to some reports, colleges might provide communication with students via social media websites. The problem is, students do not believe that the information posted on social pages of their colleges and universities can be trusted.

College administrators are capable of reaching their students through non-traditional communication technologies. It is possible with the right mobile communication strategy, even if at first the task seems overwhelming. In the end, some time ago it was unusual for colleges to detect plagiarism online or check essay online as you can find here. Today, plagiarism online detection tools are widely used by colleges and teaching stuff.
