First humanoid Robot ‘Shalu’ able to speak 9 Indian languages
Robot “Shalu” developed by Dinesh Patel a Computer Science Teacher of Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Bombay, India
He developed a humanoid robot-like “Sophia” Robot (Hanson Robotics) named “SHALU”, at home with readily available parts in a local market in his free time as a hobby without any technical support and help. which is titled as “First social humanoid Robot of the world able to speak 9 Indian and 38 foreign languages” which can be compared with the costly robots coming from big Robotics laboratories supported by multiple Robotics engineers.
After seeing Robot Sophia(Hong Kong-based Robotics company, Hanson Robotics), he thought that can it be possible to develop in India with a low-cost budget because India is a developing country where still more to go for Robotics, and the parts are not easily available. He was already inspired by the prime minister of India’s dream mission “Digital India Mission”, “Skill India Mission” and “Make in India Mission”, After a couple of months, he decided to start work on it with proper planning including multiple trial and errors, worked hard; day and night to develop a Humanoid Robot like Sophia Robot but at a very low cost without compromising the capabilities.
Finally, he got success and able to make it with readily available items in the local market such as plastic, aluminium, cardboard, wood, etc. he only works in his free time as a hobby without taking any help and support in any manner from anywhere, the whole coding is done by me only.
Robot “Shalu” (अपनी RoboShalu) came into existence because of his passion and hard work and dedication, which can speak 9 Indian and 38 foreign languages which makes her the “First Social Humanoid Robot able to speak 9 Indian languages”
Shalu is capable to speak 9 Indian languages (Hindi, Bhojpuri, Marathi, Bangla, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Nepali) in addition to English along with 38 foreign languages.
Shalu can perform multiple tasks such as face recognition, remembering person after meeting, keeping the conversation stored with her, identifying multiple common objects near to us, answering the educational questions based on Physics, Chemistry Maths, History, Geography, etc. and also can have a social casual talk on predefined contents.
Some of them specifically pointing as showing human-like behaviours & gesture, Shaking hand, joking and making fun, happiness, anger, and irritation, Solving simple math problems/equations, Reading daily current news, Reading daily horoscope, Telling food recipes, Conducting short Quizzes and Interviews, able to answers so many types of question which may students ask during teaching-learning process not only based on India but worldwide, also capable to have a casual talk like “Sophia Robot”, and many more…
Robot Shalu can work in a school as a “Robot Teacher” to answer the queries of students in the classroom as well as she can give a presentation on the specified topic. She can work as a Receptionist at different places for example airports, Schools and many offices also can be the companion of old age persons.
Robot Shalu may be an example for so many young, energetic, and passionate brains who can do for better in the field of Robotics but lagging with support and facilities in all manner. it becomes an example that Robotics Research can be done at home as a hobby in absence of sophisticated Robotics Laboratories.
