Roofs are an integral part of nearly every construction whether it is a residential house or a commercial building. The main purpose of the roof is to provide shelter, support the structure of the construction and most importantly prevent the inside space from different weather elements such as rain, wind, and dust. The two things which are considered the most during roof construction are the type of roofing materials and type of weather that persists in the area. In both residential and commercial construction, people can go to the rooftops by using stairs or ladders.

One another application or equipment that allows easy ingress and egress from the roofs are roof hatch system which has wide use, particularly in factories and warehouses. The roof hatches are specifically designed to provide convenient access to critical areas of the roof to workers who have to carry electrical or plumbing repairs. In many factories and warehouse, there are many electrical equipment which are placed on the roof such as solar panels, electric cables and wires, and HVAC (Heating, ventilation and air conditioning). The workers must perform a regular inspection to ensure that the electrical equipment is fully functional because any breakdown or malfunctioning can disrupt the operations of the factory or warehouse. There are many modern roof hatch systems which are available in a variety of size and designs. The roof hatches provide easy entry and exit to workers who have to perform the scheduled maintenance task on the roof.

One thing to consider when installing a roof hatch in the house or commercial building is the safety features as a person can fall through an open hatch and get injured. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Heal Administration) considers an open hatch a source of a safety hazard as the sides of the hatch are unprotected. OSHA has certified many guard railings which must be installed along the roof hatches to not only prevent the worker from falling over but also allow him to grab the railing for support.

The roof hatches come in standard sizes but a homeowner can order customize the hatches after providing the design specifications to the roof hatch manufactures. The different types of roof hatches are

  • Steel roof hatch

These are the most common roof hatches which provide access to the roof from the interior of the building. The steel roof hatch is made to withstand the different weather elements such as rain, dust, and wind. The steel roof hatches have strong handles to lift the lid and have a corrosion resistant coating which makes it durable. A black and yellow tapeline is used to increase its visibility and let the workers know that the hatch is currently in open position.

  • Aluminum roof hatches

The aluminum roof hatches are most popular because they are light in weight, attractive in looks, more sturdy and consists of modular fittings which helps in easy installation. These roof hatches are even more resistant to corrosion and require little repairs and maintenance. The guard railings can also be integrated easily in the aluminum roof hatch and provide better support and safety to the workers.
