Some of the Best Halloween-themed Festivals
Halloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve – this festival is known by many names across the world and loved by people of all ages. While many activities like trick-or-treating, pumpkin-carving and costume parties are customary rituals of this day, some places around the world have come up with special events to make their Halloween celebrations super-creepy. We’ve made a list of some of the most popular festivals of this kind.
- Derry Halloween:
Derry in Northern Ireland is considered among the best Halloween destinations in the world, so much so that many people think missing out on the city’s festivities is a big mistake. The event features a carnival, numerous scares situated strategically all over the city, amazing food, a great nightlife scene and much more.
- Shocktober Fest:
This yearly Halloween event was first held at Tulleys Farm in West Sussex, England in the mid-90s. A favorite of some of the UK’s biggest celebrities, this festival presents numerous haunts, live music, festive treats and runs throughout October.
- Hogwarts After Dark:
Held at the Warner Bros. Studio in Leavesden, England, this Harry Potter-themed fest invites Potterheads to spend a night in the Great Hall of Hogwarts Castle. It is replete with magical creatures, Death Eaters, and floating pumpkins and also involves fun activities like visiting the Forbidden Forest, learning combat moves, and visiting Diagon Alley with Death Eaters on the prowl.
- Fantasy Fest:
Held in the last week of October in Key West, FL, Fantasy Fest is an annual street party. First held in 1979, it has grown by leaps and bounds over the years and is comparable to New Orleans’ Mardi Gras and the Carnival in Rio De Janeiro. Despite being mostly adult-oriented, the fest includes a few family-friendly activities.
- Louisville Jack O’ Lantern Spectacular:
One of the best Halloween-themed fests in the region, the Jack-O’-Lantern Spectacular was first held in 2003. It features close to 5,000 carved and illuminated pumpkins as part of an “art show” and runs daily from October to November.
Other fests that are worth noting are the Festival of the Dead in Salem, MA, The Greenwich Village Halloween Parade in NYC, Ocean Park Halloween Fest in Hong Kong and many more.
