When Should I Change My Motorcycle Tyres?

Worn tires will destroy the efficiency of your car and even endanger you or your loved ones. You are encouraged to do a weekly inspection to check:

• The condition of the tyres
• The depth of the walkways
• Any disruption arising from impacts or any evidence of irregular wear.
• Twice a month, you are also encouraged to monitor your tire pressure.

Tires are robust and built for impact resistance, but often they puncture. If you have a flat tyre, a competent mechanic can fix it.

On the upper side of the tyres, a Michelin Man sign indicates they feature a tread wear tracker. This can be located at the bottom of the key grooves, close to little bumps. The tire has exceeded its legal wear limit of 2/32nds when the rubber has worn down to this amount. Before hitting this point, Michelin firmly advises you to change your tyres. There is no assurance beyond this point that your tires will keep you safe or deliver traction and efficiency, particularly on wet surfaces.

The lifetime of a tyre  is impossible to estimate since it has no relationship to its production date. Tires that have never, or have only been used infrequently, been used can also display signs of age. Their lifetime can be influenced by many factors: environmental conditions, conditions of storage and use, load, speed, tire pressure, servicing, riding style, and so on.

All riders routinely spend some time checking their tires to pick up any external signs of ageing or wear on the shoulders or sides, such as deformations or cracks in the tread. You should also have the tires tested by a specialist who will determine whether or not they can be replaced.

Tires can be inspected every year by a licensed technician after 5 years or more of use. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations in respect to changing original parts if the tires are to be modified. As a precaution, even though they tend to be in a relatively good shape and have not hit their tread wear, all tires that have not been replaced after ten years should be modified.

Unusual wear of the tyre treads is also a symptom of a mechanical problem (worn shock absorbers, transmission, fixings, etc.) or a balancing problem, found in some positions, in the middle or on the shoulders. As a consequence of incorrect tyre friction, it may also happen.

Verify the wheel balance every six months to stop unusual wear. This would extend the life of the tyre and guarantee a more enjoyable journey. Aside from this, relative to other bikes rode in the very same conditions, your tires can look overly worn for their mileage.

In compliance with legal standards and the kind of equipment recommended for your car, select your tyres. Using tires with the same tread pattern for the front and back for best performance. Tires that have various shapes, treads and wear patterns could affect the balance and stability of the vehicle. Unless defined by manufacturer, never fit a vehicle with one radial tire and one non-radial tyre. Never fit a car, as specified by the manufacturer, with one radial tire and one non-radial tire.
